Overview

Pocket XWord is a crossword puzzle game for your Pocket PC. It includes several puzzles and more can be downloaded from here. Pocket XWord can open any puzzle in the Across Lite format. This includes puzzles from many popular publishers such as USA Today, The New York Times, L.A. Times and The Washington Post.

How To Play

The puzzle grid is made up of hidden words. The clue for the selected word appears below the puzzle area. Try to guess the word from the clue.
To select a word: Tap any square in that word or use the hardware navigation keys or arrow keys to move the selection. The selected word appears highlighted.
To enter a letter: Tap a letter on the letter pad below the clue area to enter that letter into the highlighted letter of the selected word.
To erase a letter: Tap the erase button on the toolbar or use the backspace key.
To change direction: To alternate between Across and Down words, tap the selected square again or use the toolbar button.
To zoom in and out: Tap the zoom button on the toolbar to view more of the puzzle at once, or to view a smaller portion enlarged.
To see other parts of the puzzle: When the entire puzzle is too big to fit in the screen tap the scroll arrows on the edges, or drag the puzzle to see other parts of it.
To see a list of clues: Tap the Clue List button on the toolbar. Tap a clue in the clue list to go to its word in the puzzle.
To use pencil: Tap the pencil button to switch the current word between pen and pencil. Use the pencil to keep track of words you are unsure of.

To download a puzzle: Choose "Download Puzzle" from the "Puzzle" menu to download puzzles directly from the internet to your Pocket PC, or click here.
To open a new puzzle: Choose "Open Puzzle" from the "Puzzle" menu to open a puzzle from "My Documents" or a storage card. Puzzles that came with Pocket XWord and all puzzles you have downloaded to "My Documents", a folder therein, or a storage card will be available.

Tips

The built-in SIP keyboard, character recogizer, or other hardware keyboards can also be used to enter and erase letters. Transcriber is not supported.
Change the color theme and other options from the Options dialog available on the "Puzzle" menu.
Tap a clue that's too large to fit in the clue area to see the entire clue.
To check if what you have entered is correct use the Check submenu in the Puzzle menu. Checked letters appear marked in the upper right corner if they are incorrect. Turn on the Automatically Check Words option to check letters for correctness as you enter them (not available for scrambled puzzles).
To reveal parts of the puzzle you are unable to solve use the Reveal submenu in the Puzzle menu. Revealed letters appear marked in the upper right corner. Revealing can only be undone by clearing the entire puzzle.
Turn on the Skip Filled Letters option to skip the selection over already entered letters as you enter new ones.
While Pocket XWord can be used to play scrambled puzzles, it cannot unscramble them.

Pocket XWord will run on any Pocket PC 2000, 2002 or 2003.

Can I install Pocket XWord on my Pocket PC manually?
PXSetup should automatically install Pocket XWord to your Pocket PC, but if you want to install manually, copy the appropriate CAB file (PXARM.CAB, PXMIPS.CAB or PXSH3.CAB) to your Pocket PC \Windows\Start menu and run it. To find out which CAB file is right for your Pocket PC, tap Start, Settings, System, About and look at the Processor field. Pocket PC 2002 and 2003 devices usually have ARM processors.
